Breaking down our groundbreaking approach.

Introducing Therabis.

We offer easy-to-use daily supplements for your pets in three specific formulations—Stop the Itch, Calm and Quiet and Up and Moving—all powered by our proprietary all-natural formulas. In recent years, the compounds found in hemp have garnered recognition for their therapeutic effects. And there’s a good chance you have questions about what they are and how they work. Below you’ll find lots of information about how we’ve formulated our products and how those formulations affect your pet’s body naturally and effectively.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (or CBD) is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in hemp that’s classified as a cannabinoid. Like all other cannabinoids, CBD interacts with your pet’s endocannabinoid system—the central regulatory system known to affect bodily processes such as digestion, mood and sleep. Without any external influence, your pet’s body naturally produces its own cannabinoids that bind to cannabinoid receptors in both the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. This existing internal infrastructure is what allows phytocannabinoids (or cannabinoids found in plants like hemp) to provide powerful benefits.

“I think that the majority of pet owners are by nature very curious about the benefits of hemp right now, especially relative to their pets.” – Dr. Stephen M. Katz, Veterinary Expert and Therabis Founder

Of all phytocannabinoids currently being studied, CBD has shown the most therapeutic promise in clinical research. Unlike THC, CBD does not create a psychoactive effect. This may be because CBD does not directly bind to the body’s cannabinoid receptors, but rather indirectly affects the receptors through other pathways. You may have seen CBD in the media in recent years for its success in treating epileptic disorders in humans. Researchers also believe that cannabinoids, like CBD, will make good candidates for studies, in a variety of other areas due to their low toxicity and dose dependency.

In the realm of veterinary science, CBD is one of the most exciting and promising ingredients being studied today.

What is hemp? And how is it different from marijuana?

Despite common misconceptions, hemp is not another euphemism for marijuana. In fact, hemp and marijuana are common names for two very different plants. Like a chihuahua and a mastiff are both breeds of the Canis Lupis species (the domesticated dog), hemp and marijuana are ‘breeds’ (called strains or cultivars) of the cannabis sativa plant species. But just as the chihuahua’s and mastiff’s similarities end at their species, so it is with hemp and marijuana.

One of the most profound differences between hemp and marijuana is psychoactivity. In recent history, breeders have worked to build strains of marijuana with the highest possible content of THC – the ‘drug’ in marijuana that makes you feel high. However, hemp has been bred to fulfill industrial applications like fiber, paper and nutrition, and contains less than .3% THC by law. Which is why neither people nor dogs experience a high when they consume hemp-derived products.

The man behind the Therabis method

Veterinary Expert and Therabis Founder, Dr. Stephen M. Katz

Dr.Katz’s lifetime dedication to the well-being of animals began accidentally in college with a trip to the National Zoo, when he saved the life of an unsuspecting zoo keeper from a 24-foot python! And after an encounter like that, the rest was destiny. He moved from the Galapagos Islands to Papua New Guinea to do research before becoming the director of a zoo for exotic animals in the Sahara. You could say Dr.Katz’s love of animals has really taken him places – literally.

Dr. Katz, a lifetime veterinarian, is remarkably passionate about the wellbeing of animals.

The motivation to develop Therabis came to Dr. Katz over the years when his clients were distressed about how their pets weren’t able to maintain their everyday routines as they aged. Dogs who loved curling up next to their owners on the couch suddenly weren’t able to make it onto the couch at all. With very limited options for treating arthritis, joint mobility and hip dysplasia, Dr. Katz took it upon himself to find better solutions for these pets and their families.

The Therabis formulation was founded on advice Dr. Katz received from a colleague. He told Dr. Katz that he was having great success by combining chromium and vitamin C. Dr. Katz tried that combination, liked the results he saw and continued to improve upon the formulation for an entire decade by adding ingredients like green-lipped mussel and more.

I started by giving Therabis to friends. Then I gave it to my clients without charging. And they all came back for more and had anecdotal success stories about increased mobility and energy levels.

More about the key ingredients in Therabis

Every Therabis product is formulated with hemp protein powder, green-lipped mussel, vitamin C and chromium to help your pet maintain a calm energy, preserve joint mobility and enjoy overall skin health.

Key Active Ingredients in Up and Moving

The Up and Moving powder supplement is designed to be incorporated into your pet’s diet over the long-term. This enables it to provide general health benefits that are compounded by mobility and joint health benefits. Vitamin C helps your pet’s body maintain healthy levels of collagen. Collagen is the connective tissue that affixes your pet’s muscles to their bones, and it’s an important component in joint health. Green-lipped mussel works in this formulation to provide much needed omega-3 fatty acids that improve mobility and support your pet’s overall joint health.

Key Active Ingredients in Stop the Itch

With Stop the Itch, we’ve combined quercetin and bromelain with our core formula. Incorporating it into your pet’s diet over the long-term will augment the general health benefits of the core formula with ingredients that promote skin and hair health. Bromelain, an enzyme extracted from pineapple, contains skin soothing amino acids that promote skin and coat health by addressing the causes of your pet’s scratching and reducing the response. Quercetin, a natural flavonoid that posseses skin calming and antioxidant qualities, can ease the root cause of prolonged scratching.

Key Ingredients in Calm and Quiet

The Calm and Quiet powder supplement has been designed to be incorporated into your pet’s diet over the long-term, allowing them to capitalize on the general health benefits of the core formula as well as the product's very specific ingredients. Chromium works with vitamin C and hemp powder to help to potentiate the combination’s soothing capabilities. Though its actual mechanism is still gaining popularity, chromium is an essential ingredient in this formulation due to its anti-anxiety properties. We’ve also added L-theanine, because it’s shown to increase alpha wave generation and lower anxiety in small-scale human studies.
